Starting your job Search
Some great ideas to kick start your job search are:
●
Preparing your Resume and Filling out applications
●
Notifying your friends and family
● Viewing local job ads and classifieds
Depending on what type of career you want you may need to create a resume or simply fill out applications at various businesses for the position you want. Having and creating an updated resume is a great idea for current or future career prospects and having it ready is definitely a plus. Once you find a hiring company or job ad you’ll need to determine if a resume is required from the job ad or call to see if all they require is filling a job application.
Let your
friends and family know you are on the hunt for a job by word of mouth,
updating your facebook or twitter
status, phonecalls or any other methods you can think of. This is likely one of the easiest ways to get
a job because one of your loved may have good job connections or ever hire you
outright so get the word out.
You can also start your search by looking around your town or city for help wanted ads, viewing local classifieds and newspapers and searching online job sites like Monster.com, Careerbuilder.com and more. Local newspapers and other publicatiosn usually have classifieds with job ads and give you a great idea of who’s hiring in your city. If you are willing to relocate the online job ads will allow to find openings in other states or cities.
Online and Offline Job Searching
The internet provides and excellent way for job seekers to look for work from the comfort of their home at any time of day and still cover a lot of territory. Sites like Online Newspaper sites, Linkedin.com, Careerbuilder, Monster or your target companies online applicaton page are great ways to instantly view job vacancies in your area or in other locations. Still a lot can be said for offline job searching and old fashioned face to face applications and company visits so it should not be left out of a good job search.
Social networking sites like
Linkedin.com and Facebook Marketplace can add a Web 2.0 feel your online job
search. Linkedin especially allows you
to connect to past colleagues while also searching through job ads and vacancies. Facebook Markeplace and even Craigslist can
also provide some good job vacancies but since they are free ads they may not
always lead to serious employers willing to backup their free ad with a good
job position.
Interviewing
One of the key ingredients of a successful job search is having good interview where you impress your potential employers. For less formal interviews you want to dress appropriately in business attire or business casual attire depending on the position you are applying for. For professional positions you should bring along a pen, another copy of your resume even - if you sent one previously and dress professionally without too many distracting accessories or ornaments. A nice business suit always makes a good impression for a male or female but in many case a shirt and tie will do.
You should answer all questions as honestly as possible including you work history and anything that may have happened on previous jobs without criticizing your past employers. Also try to have a few questions for the interviewer as way but not questions like “How do I get your Job ?” as that may be inappropriate. Some employers do like for applicants to follow up so consider doing that but not in overly bothersome manner.
